Arrow of Light

Tonight, was the first of several events in the next couple of months, that remind me that my boy is growing up! Travis crossed over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts tonight!

The Crossing Over is sort of an elaborate affair. First, there is Indian dancing. Then reading of a story. Then the scouts are presented with their Arrow of Light, which is the highest rank a Cub Scout can achieve  and must be earned. In order to receive their Arrow of Light, each scout had to prove that they know their Scout Oath, Law and Motto. They also recited them aloud for all to hear at the ceremony.

As the Webelos II's said the scout law, Travis read aloud from their book, more about what each word in the scout law means. He did a great job reading in front of everyone! Although, it was more than a slight surprise, when he read aloud "stay away from pornography" on one part of the law (about being Clean)!!!

After receiving their Arrow of Light plaques, each scout then had to Cross Over. They literally walk across a bridge. And on one side of the bridge, is their parents, who remove their cub scout Webelos scarf from them...then they cross over the bridge, where they are greeted by boy scouts, who place the new boy scout scarf on them. Jay, being the Webelos II Den Leader (and Assistant Cubmaster) was busy MC'ing everything, so I got the honor of sending Travis on his way to Boy Scouts alone. As I was taking the slide off his scarf, I whispered "I love you" and just as he turned to walk up the steps he whispered back "i love you more". AAAAGHHHHH that was my favorite moment of the night! :)

So...he walked across the bridge to his new Troop, where they were all waiting to welcome him and the other Webelos scouts. And now, a new adventure in scouting begins! But first, we have to buy him a whole bunch of new gear ;)
