Post Op: day 2

Well. Where to begin. It was a long night. Riley was super restless and I spent a lot of time standing by his bedside patting his bottom. Around 6am we discovered why...he suddenly began vomiting up nasty, stinky green stuff. Then promptly went sound to sleep (after we cleaned him up of course). Until he puked again. Now, vomiting in Riley will ALWAYS be a concern, because it can mean there is an intestinal blockage which is something he will always be at a higher risk of having (forever). But he also still has that replogle tube in his nose, down into his stomach, that is suctioning out his stomach contents. So why is he vomiting? Surgery was paged and a stat xray ordered. They didn't even let radiology do a bedside xray, they wanted him to go down to radiology for the better machine. Riley has never EVER had to go down for a regular xray. That is further proof how cautious they are with him this go around. So the xray person comes up to transport him down. She pushes the crib and I the IV pole. I help hold him still for two shots of his belly. The end result is that his replogle tube wasn't positioned properly and so wasn't suctioning out all that it should have, which was making Riley sick. Tube was readjusted (that wasn't enjoyable) and he has been fine since. That kept the morning busy, after a somewhat sleepless night.

Then, late this afternoon, Riley wakes from a nap and is a little fussy. I walk up to his crib and smell something. I look under his blanket with dread at his incision. It looks fine. I look at the collection container on his replogle to see if it has somehow overflowed or something...nope. I doubtfully peek into his diaper and find a surprise. We aren't real sure what to make of it, but I change the diaper and let the nurse know. Riley sometimes has a mucousy discharge from his bottom, but that isn't really poop. And so we aren't sure if that is what this is, or if its really poop since as of this morning, his bowels were still quiet. Then, about 15 minutes later, he loudly lets out some gas and true poop follows. Now we know, Riley has pooped. Again, we aren't quite sure what to think. Last time, it took 5 days for him to poop, and even then, his body hadn't healed enough to maintain the connection. Today makes only 2 days. So, we are actually kind of anxious about it, not really celebrating it. He has pooped several times this afternoon/evening so far. Its obvious things are working. Of course they were working last time too...so we'll see what the surgeon says tomorrow morning. He may not make any changes for another day or so.

He's obviously feeling better though

And even tolerated getting out of bed this evening
