The surgeons just came by to see us. Gave us all the nasty details of what NEC means and does, etc. Said Riley's bowel still does not indicate that surgery is the best option right now. Said the bacteria in his blood stream is making it's rounds but that his systems are tolerating it "well" (meaning as well as he can). His lungs were having a little issue yesterday which is why they switched his type of ventilator but that has been resolved so at the moment he is stable. Again he emphasized how sick he is and how serious this is. All we can do is sit and nod and cry. The next 24-48 hours is critical in his situation.
They are getting ready to do an ultrasound on his intestines to check the blood flow. There is a CHANCE that this is NOT NEC at all (although he said that is the diagnosis they are going with until proven otherwise and what all signs point towards). I don't remember what he called it, but basically, when they began tube feedings, it could be that his intestines twisted on themselves cutting off blood supply. If this is the case, he has at MOST 3 hours that surgery could benefit, and it could be that the bowel is already dead. You can't live without your bowel.
So we are praying that if it IS the twisted bowel thing that it's not severe yet and they can fix it. OR that it's still the NEC, and he remains strong enough to fight the infection.

I got an email from Christie Pope about you guys. My wife and I are praying for you all. You're in good hands at Duke; we've been there, done that. The angels that watched over my babies know the place pretty well too.

Dear Lindsey and Jay, Keep trusting in the Lord. Love you both and baby Riley. Travis did real good for us after your phone call. I think he must have been mulling over the helicopter ride that Riley took...first thing he told Sandra. We pray for Travis too that he can understand all this as it all unfolds and he learns just how sick baby Riley is. Faith and Prayer are powerful. Take care, Love, Pauline
LIndsay and Jay - I'm Ben's wife and a friend of Jay and Christie's. You really are in good hands. Our 26.1 week twin girls were born at Duke and ultimately spent 4.5 months in the hospital. I understand the unhappiness at the change of location. We were transfer to Durham Regional and I found it very difficult. It's hard getting used to a new place, especially coming from one of the new NICU prototypes where the babies have their own rooms.
I know you are far from your friends and family. We are happy to be here if you need us (we live in Durham). I will be at Duke Tuesday afternoon. I would be happy to come by and just sit with you if you would like. I will have my girls and if you think seeing them would be too much, I can arrange to come back another day.
NEC is so scary, I know. I want to tell you everything will be okay, but I know it won't make you feel better. I can only tell you to hold on to hope and pray. We will be praying with you.
If you would like me to come by, please email me with your phone number and we will talk. johelenc1@YAHOO.COM
Hold fast - the angels really do know Duke well.

I'm praying for your little Riley! Our family has been through the PICU and it's not been fun! Just know that the doctors there are great! Michelle sent me your website.
I'll pass this around the prayer bears through my mother.

Hi Lindsey~
I'm Brandi's mother, Jan. My grandbaby was in the PICU there at Duke back in 2006. As hard as it may be to be there, I will tell you that the NICU and PICU nurses and doctors are the best in the land. They are very loving, caring and informative. They love their jobs and care for these babies as if they were their own. They work from their hearts.
We will keep your sweet baby Riley in our prayers. I will pass your website on to the Prayerbears for them to pray for baby Riley. They are a group of loving, caring women who lift up each and every child that comes across their way.
Hold tight to the Lord and He will see you through this most difficult time.
Much love and prayer~
Jan Chapdelaine and family
