Breathing issues

Well, I waited to update with the hope that I would know the answer but I don't so I'm just going to have to go ahead and update now.

For the past several days, Riley has been breathing fast again. Like he did when he was born. They aren't quite sure why. His chest xrays show his lungs are clear. They do show that his diaphragm is slightly elevated, which can be common after abdominal surgery. That COULD be causing him to take shallower breaths. His hematocrit level was low yesterday, so they gave him a blood transfusion, and they thought being anemic was contributing to the rapid breathing but that should have settled on out by now if so. (His platelets were over 200 though!). They are giving him lasix's to get rid of the extra fluids in case that contributing. His oxygen saturation is just fine and he's comfortable, so not struggling to breathe or anything like that, just breathing too fast to be able to feed.

He only got 2 feeds in Wednesday and they stopped them due to the breathing rate increasing. He didn't vomit at all though, so that means he tolerated them just fine. A good thing. But as long as his breathing is this fast, they won't feed him.

They also noticed a slight heart murmur so going to be doing an electrocardiogram on him sometime today to check that out.

I think that catches up to today for now. Not the best of days yesterday since worrying over what is going on now.

OH and he will NOT be transferred back to New Hanover after he loses the drain. Neonatology wants him eating first. Argh. I wish they could get their stories straight.

Hoping and praying all of the new issues are minor, and that Riley will be able to eat again real soon. Great news on your platelet count Sweet Boy. You are in my prayers, and in my thoughts daily.
